The Stohlquist Bullet Throw Rope
Stohlquist introduced the Descent Rescue PFD this winter. It’s a new design altogether that seems to be a good upgrade from the X-Tract. The Bullet Rope is a compact throw bag that can either insert into the front pocket of the Descent, or onto a stnadard 2″ QR belt. It’s compact in size and has 55 feet of brightly colored polypro rope. The sides are made of mesh, but only the top half of it drains water. This allows you to weight the bag with a little bit of H20 before you throw it.
Specs:
Pros:
- The Bullet Rope fits into standard 2″ QR belts. This means that if you have a Stohlquist, Kokatat, Astral or any other brand of PFD that uses a 2″ belt, the bag can attach no problem.
- 55 feet of poly pro rope is good for a personal “tag bag”. It’s enough rope to get out to the swimmer, but also keeps the bag pretty compact in size.
- The rope fits like a glove into the Descent’s front pocket. This is very similar to the Astral Green Jacket system, only the Stohlquist Bullet rope has QR belt attachments too.
- The mesh sides on the bag are good for draining water, and drying quickly. The top of the mesh is the only part of the bag that actually drains water out, which helps when you want to weight the bag a little, to throw it farther.
- The rectangular shape keeps the bag from rolling off of slopes.
- The reverse taper design and wide gusseted mouth makes the bullet easy to load and throw.
Cons:
- 55 feet of solid core polypropylene rope is good for a personal throw bag to keep on your person. It’s not the ideal choice for a full on rescue bag, one that you would use for z-drags, serious pins, raft rescue etc. Spectra rope is much stronger, and is of a similar width. The good news is that poly pro rope is still strong, and is also inexpensive.
The Verdict:
Overall, the Stohlquist Bullet Throw Rope is a great value for only 49.95. It’s got all of the basic personal ‘tag bag” features (55 feet of rope, compact shape to fit in a PFD,etc) plus some innovative ideas such as loops that attach to any 2″ QR belt, and the ability to hold water, but also drain when needed. If you have a Descent, or plan on getting one, you need to check out the Bullet Rope for sure, it fits right in the front pocket.
